COVID-19: Deferred exams, recruitment postponement has left the Indian youth perplexed

As the uncertainty over the containment of the COVID-19 virus persists, the youth/student standing at the centre of this quagmire is only left more perplexed

India is presently stuck in the clutches of the Coronavirus. The second wave of COVID-19 infection has hit the country even harder.  The virus has not only hit the citizens’ health but also their wallet. It is adversely affecting everything in the country including one’s livelihood.

In the wake of the surge of COVID-19 cases in the country, the government has decided to put another lockdown to contain the spread of the virus. With the new lockdown in place, life has again come to a standstill.

In the backdrop of the lockdown and the severity of the virus many scheduled exams have been postponed. Many state-level board exams, national-level exams, entrance exams as well as government job recruitment exams have been postponed until further notice.

As the uncertainty over the containment of the COVID-19 virus persists, the youth/student standing at the centre of this quagmire is only left more perplexed. He wonders where lies his future when all that surrounds him has come to a standstill.

Time lost is time lost. A year lost by a student or a new graduate is something he will never recover. Even if the students were to be promoted, there may still remain a gap in education which will have to be filled in and what about the new graduate? With unemployment running confidently in the country, he will have lost a year’s worth of earnings, if any.

Exams postponed

As the number of cases of COVID-19 kept growing, educational institutions were asked to shut down by the government. But education had to be given. To fill in this gap, online education made a rapid entry into the scenario. Although the lack of education was handled by a change in the mode of education to some extent, the scheduled exams remained as per schedule.

Eventually, some state governments decided to promote students up to 8 standard without exams. The promotion was based either on the inter assessment of the students or by new criteria that the individual government would create.

However, some state governments have decided to promote the students ‘in general`. This act may not help in deciding if the student has in fact learnt his subject well or not.

Board exams postponed

Board exams are a career-defining moment for a student in India. Neither parents nor the students trifle with these exams. Hence, even in the backdrop of the Coronavirus, the board exams remained as per schedule.

However recently, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) cancelled its class 10th exams and postponed its class 12th exams. Similarly, CISCE postponed its class 10th, 12th board exams. The decision was taken in response to the still-rising cases of COVID-19 in the country.

Although the decision taken, does protect the students from possible infection, the time loss will have its effect. The delay in passing the exam or coming out as a professional in the future will still leave its mark on the individual as well as the country.

Entrance exams deferred

With the rising death toll and cases of Coronavirus in the country, several entrance exams/competitive exams have been deferred. No doubt the aim is to contain the spread of the virus and prevent the students from getting infected, but the time lost and the uncertainty of the dates for the exams in the future does leave the students in a constant environment of pressure.

The sweet relief of having attempted the exam or the wait for the results seems to be further away. The student, will get more time to prepare for the exam, but how will they find some relief from the constant pressure of facing the exam either? It’s not like they can simply walk to the park to breathe in some fresh air to relieve some stress during a lockdown.

Being confined within the four walls without peer-to-peer interaction and awaiting the challenge of topping a competitive exam is quite a massive challenge the student of the 21st century is compelled to face during the Coronavirus pandemic, and it is worrisome.

Below mentioned are some of the Board exams, Entrance Exams and University Exams that have been cancelled or postponed due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in India

Recruitment Exams postponed

As mentioned earlier in this article, the COVID-19 virus has left none to escape from its grip. It has hit hard every sector and everyone has felt the factor of helplessness. Similarly, it has also adversely affected employment.

With the surge in Coronavirus cases in the country, a lockdown was implemented. This hit the blue-collar workers the worst. But the effect was not limited only to them, all were affected. Many white-collar jobs were terminated and recruitment for red-collar jobs was deferred.

Amidst all this confusion stood alone the new graduate. Emerging from their education life, the new graduates were excited to finally become the professionals they were trained to be, but alas, professions were that one thing that was now not available for them.

A joint report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) states that around 41 lakh youth in India lost jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic and most job losses were in the construction and farming sector.

As traditional work from the office went to the not so traditional work from the home arena, job opportunities dwindled. Many even lost their livelihood, since their job was more, a requirement in office but not from home kind. Thus, unemployment increased, recruitment decreased and the new graduates sort the age-old employment of the red-collar.

However, COVID-19 made no partiality and also struck government jobs equally. With the lockdown in place to contain the spread of Coronavirus, recruitment drives aren’t exactly feasible. Although vacancies are aplenty, the scheduled recruitment drives had to be postponed. Thus, the new graduates were again left in limbo.

Below mentioned are some of the Recruitment Exams which have been postponed due to the never-ending COVID-19 season

Hopefully, everything will come down to normal and recruitment drives will resume.  But, how will a new graduate fare in such recruitment? Wouldn’t a company rather recruit an experienced professional who lost his post during the pandemic than a fresher?  Besides, India also has a peculiar problem of “Fresher required, but with experience”.
